Kerala Govt decides to grant menstruation leave to female students in all universities
The Kerala Higher Education Department has issued orders allowing menstruation leave for all female students in all the universities under the state government.
Taking into consideration the mental and physical difficulties faced by female students during menstruation, necessary steps will be taken to implement menstrual leave in all universities: Higher Education Minister R Bindu.
Close on the heels of the decision of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) to grant menstrual leave to its female students, the Kerala Technical University (KTU) on Tuesday decided to give the benefit to its female students as well.
The KTU syndicate which met on Tuesday has taken a decision to this effect. The decision will be applicable in all colleges under the university.
In a first, the CUSAT the other day decided to grant menstrual leave to its female students following a representation from the students’ union of the university. The female students can claim menstrual benefits in the form of additional condonation of shortage of attendance

At present, only those who have 75 per cent attendance can write the semester exams. If the attendance is less than this, then it is mandatory to submit an application to the Vice-Chancellor and produce a medical certificate. However, a medical certificate is not required for menstrual leave and students just have to submit an application.
Kerala Higher Education Minister R Bindu said that in the wake of the Cochin University of Science and Technology (CUSAT) allowing female students to claim an additional condonation of two per cent of the attendance in each semester as ‘menstruation benefits,’ other universities will also consider replicating the model.
“Taking into consideration the mental and physical difficulties faced by female students during menstruation, necessary steps will be taken to implement menstrual leave in all universities,” R Bindu wrote in a Facebook post.
